This times 100 when I drove my T-bird back home after rebuilding the engine. It wouldn’t idle, so I had to keep my right foot on the gas constantly while braking with my left foot, which was especially scary since the brakes are a bit touchy and my left foot lacked the necessary finesse. And not only were stops jerky, but a carburetor problem made it stall almost every time I turned right. But... It ran again! And once the carburetor is fixed and the engine is broken in and the coolant problem that just happened is fixed and a partridge in a pear tree is fixed, it should be a reliable daily, right?

...

Right?

Looking good, I’ve got my 68 down to work on the clutch. It developed a squeal and a clunk when you push the clutch in.

Heh, I just took it to get gas because quite frankly it needed 93, not the 87 we had in the shed.

It doesn’t brake straight, the plugs on the distributor (the ones for the tach and the coil) aren’t in particularly well so if you hit a hard bump, they pop off and the car dies. When it died, it backfired and smoke filled the interior for a few seconds, scaring the absolute shit out of me (Second time it’s ever done that on me).

If you tried to open it up a bit, it doesn’t at all do what a built 454 should. It’s lazy. I think there’s something wrong in the trans because when it isn’t backfiring the throttle response isn’t bad.

I tried to launch it from a stop sign ONCE. Now, I should make clear I didn’t intend to speed or necessarily peel out. I just wanted to see if it’d do what I thought it would. And it disappointed by doing exactly that. A backfire through the carb. Didn’t die that time though.

HOWEVER, rumbling down a neighborhood street with Billy Joel crackling out of the one semi-working speaker as the whole car vibrates and rocks just makes you feel on top of the fuckin’ world.

All in all, if everything gets taken care of it’ll be a fun car. Shouldn’t be problematic....

.....

...Right?

(In short, I know what you mean.)

If only it drove as good as it looks!

I wish ours was still a 4 speed. The pedal’s still in it. But if I go 4 speed, I want a Rockcrusher. It doesn’t *need* one, I just want the whine.

I’m jealous of the Billy Joel. I’ve only got an AM radio with a broken selector dial, and the only preset on it that works gives me Catholic radio :/

Not that Catholic radio is bad or anything, but... liturgies ain’t as much of a bop.

Sounds like maybe a timing issue with it back firing through carb. Also if you have a older Holley on it, then its safe to say your power valves are blown making the back firing happen more. Newer Holley’ s have reliefs to save the valves. You could also have a valve issue causing it to pop through the carb.

Ouch. To be honest, I’d rather listen to Black Sabbath, but the cassette player no longer works. Let’s just say Bob Seger’s ‘Night Moves’ has never sounded more demonic.

Shame as I got a bunch of tapes for it- It worked flawlessly last time I tried it!

The Holley is 3 years old.

Timing is probably off- we went by ear because it doesn’t have a tab. I guarantee it has some sort of valve issue because at least one lifter is dead. I’m just praying the cam itself isn’t bad but I haven’t much hope.

T-birds could be had with 8-track players, but the original owner of mine bought exactly zero optional extras, so instead I have a little pie ce of chrome trim over the hole where it would’ve been to remind me that I don’t have one :p

This one had an AM radio and nothing else, but some point in the late 80s or early 90s got a Pioneer Super Tuner.

The guy that did the 454/TH400 swap (originally a 396/4 speed) actually drove it to high school with the AM radio. That was the mid 80s.

He’s a pro-mod racer now.

that bad lifter is probably your main culprit for the backfiring then as that valve isnt working. We had a 283 small block crack about 5 rocker arms in two and when they went it would pop through the carbs (had tri power on that motor)

Now mine’s got... an iPod and a Bluetooth speaker. Which goes nicely with my “air conditioning” (mist spray bottle + open window) ;)

Oh man, that reminds me.

Black vinyl interior+black vinyl top-sound/heat deadening+humid day= roasting.

Hopefully it goes to the shop (I’ve been saying “soon” for over a year now) and he (it’s a buddy of my grandfather’s who owns a local parts shop) can take care of it. It’s also getting front discs because I’m sick of the drums failing.

Yeah... Funnily enough, most T-birds had air conditioning, but mine’s one of the few base model examples that doesn’t. I’m always a bit baffled by people who prefer classic cars without air conditioning... I mean sure, A/C takes away a bit of power, but... air conditioning!

This thing already runs hot without the extra load of an A/C compressor.

And my engine seems to be having enough trouble as-is... At least no A/C is one less thing to worry about.

yeah the drums on the camaro’s were terrible. Luckily my 68 was a factory front disc car. Had a 67 camaro with all drum and it was terrible, but my 68 C10 is all drum and it honestly brakes as good as my disc/drum camaro.
